Style Icon of the Week: The 1950s Movie Star
If you’ve been following our tumblr for a while you may have noticed that each week we showcase a trend of theme we’ve been digging. Usually, for our Wednesday Style/Fashion Icon/Idol of the Week posts, we choose to showcase something that has absolutely nothing to do with the week’s theme. Well, this week we’re changing it up. In honour of this week’s 1950s theme - we’re showcasing the 1950s movie star.
The 50s were all about glam, glam, glam. A new era of post WWII prosperity, we know all about how materialism was prevalent in order to keep up with the Joneses and the Smiths, and also ‘entertain’ women who had to go back into the home after working during the war.
Check out some of our favourite leading ladies style in some 1950s film classics.
Bette Davis wearing an off the shoulder dress in All About Eve(1950)
Elizabeth Taylor emerging from a pool in a leopard print bathing suit in The Last Time I Saw Paris. Only the Dame Elizabeth could pull off those earrings in the pool.(1954)
Umm, duh - can’t talk about 1950s movie star glam without Norma Jean
Double duh - Audrey Hepburn in 1954’s Sabrina. Who could forget that Givenchy gown?
Cyd Charisse rockin’ the flapper look in Singin’ in the Rain (1952) shows a nostalgia for a bygone era of fashion
Anita Ekberg in Fellini’s La Dolce Vita. Balenciaga’s dress (similar to the one Ekberg is wearing) was said to have inspired the whole film (OK this one is from 1960 but shhh…)
