The Signature Bow

Leonie, originally from the Netherlands now based in Vancouver, is a blogger and marketing coordinator. Her blog, The Signature Bow, consists of fashion DIY, trends, recipes and inspirations. Check out our Q&A with Leonie!
1) How long have you been blogging for? What made you start?
I have been blogging for almost 1.5 years. I started one month after moving to Vancouver from the Netherlands. I had been reading blogs for years and I thought this was the perfect moment for (another) fresh start.

2) How would you describe your aesthetic?
My aesthetic is ever-changing and evolving; I appreciate and like trying new styles. I feel easily inspired by a picture or a movie and can get carried away for a while with a certain look. I used to be all about pink, floral and bows (hence the blog name), now I have a thing for black, leather and statement jewelry. I follow trends, but don’t use them as a guideline - I still like to incorporate my own ideas. Whether dressed-up or down, it always has to be feminine. And lots of classic jewelry: my golden bracelets and ring, and chic vintage pieces.

3) Your perfect outfit consists of?
My perfect outfit really depends on my mood, but I always like to throw in ‘a favorite’ of some sort… be it a piece of jewelry, pretty shoes or just comfortable clothing. If it makes me feel good at that moment, it’s perfect.

4) A classic trend you try to incorporate into your style.
This season I feel drawn to the most classic “color” out there: black. An all-black outfit with gold and/or vintage jewelry can look so effortless and chic at the same time. If I could (= would dare), I’d love to walk around all dolled up like in the 40s/50s/60s. But that wouldn’t be very convenient!

5) One thing on your bucket list you have to do.
One thing that has been on my (bucket) list since forever: visiting NYC. Actually traveling in general - there is too much to see in this world to just stay in one place!

Amy Scheepers from Wolf and Wood

Amy Scheepers is a photographer, blogger, fashion lover and dreamer living in South Africa. Check out our Q&A with Amy below.

1. How long have you been blogging for? What made you start?
I have been blogging about my photography (my passion) on my other blog- for about 2 years now. My personal style blog, Wolf and Wood, is more recent, I’v been doing it for about 6 months now.
I actually have no idea why I started, I just know I’v always loved fashion and having loved reading other blogs for ages now, and oneday I just decided, and haven’t looked back :)

2. How would you describe your aesthetic?
Very relaxed, bit quirky. I like things that have something fun about them, I love collars, knits, high waists and chelsea boots! I’m not how exactly that describes my style, but I would say I like to look like I’m extremely comfortable in my own skin.

3. Your perfect outfit consists of?
Haha, there are so many great outfits out there! I think something that will always appeal to me is a sweet printed dress with a collar and an over sized cardigan, and I would love to pair it with Jeffrey Campbell rumble booties with socks.

4. A Spring trend you can’t live without…
A high waist bikini!

5. One thing on your bucket list you have to do
Travel. Particularly to Amsterdam, Rome, South America, and Morocco.

Van City Pretty

Kendra from Vancouver is a freelance writer and has written for numerous fashion magazines. Her VanCityPretty consists of fashion sales, cheap style thrills and thrift store scores. Check out our Q&A with her!
1) When did you start VanCityPretty? What prompted you to start?
As a freelance fashion writer, I’m always writing about style, working on DIY projects, attending fashion shows, styling etc. Whenever I discovered something new, I would share it with my friends and family. The more that I did this, the more that I was told I should start sharing the new people I meet, brands I fall in love with, and new fashion I discover with as many people as possible. I also wanted a place to store my writing portfolio and press, so Van City Pretty was born!
2) What/who has been the strongest influence in your life (thus far)?
My mother; she’s incredibly inspirational, and one of the best writers I know. She taught my sister and I that we are capable of achieving anything, and was my personal editor when I was starting out. I’m sure she was sick of reading about skinny jeans, smokey eyeshadow, and oversized purses, but she never complained. Now that I have other people editing my work, she still reads every article that I write.
3) What advice would you give someone trying to get into the fashion industry?
It’s a daunting industry to break into, so take every opportunity you receive. If you feel like you don’t have any opportunities, make your own. Start by volunteering for a brand, magazine, local newspaper, or fashion photographer. Someone one told me once that “it takes many years to become an overnight success”, and this has always stuck with me. Hard work pays off, as long as you’re willing to work for it.
4) How do you describe your style and aesthetic? Items you try to incorporate into your daily outfit…
If I had to describe my style in one word, I would say “classic.” I’ve never underestimated the powers of a little black dress, and I own more pencil skirts than pencils. A large part of my personal style is developed through my frequent visits to second hand stores, which I feature in my “Thrift Store Scores” section of Van City Pretty. I’ve always had a soft spot for vintage clothing, and my outfits usually include at least one thrift store gem.
5) What is the other half of your double life? Beside VanCityPretty? Do you work somewhere else full time?
I’m a freelance fashion writer for a number of websites (MTV FORA, typeF, Huffington Post Style, and Golden Girl Finance, to name a few). I also have a fulltime job doing website consultation and writing, which has forced me to master my time managment and multitasking skills. My days are long, but it’s definitley worth it.

Honey & Silk

Stephanie Liu is the woman behind Honey & Silk. With her exquisite style and approachable personality, Stephanie has gained a great following with her blog. Check out our Q&A with Stephanie!
1) When did you start blogging? What prompted you to start?
I started in July 2010 and I initially started Honey & Silk as a food and fashion blog, where fashion focused on general trends and shopping. I love to share ideas and new discoveries with like-minded readers and it’s an outlet for me where I can write creatively and eloquently. So these reasons are why I started a blog in the first place. After a couple of months, I wanted to share this new heart-printed blouse I was obsessing over that I took a picture of wearing. That was my first “outfit” shot, and from there, my blog has evolved into sharing personal looks and style.
2) What has been the strongest influence in your life (thus far)?
My mom for her style and passion. She taught me that there is elegance in simplicity. Thus her polished, classic, understated style plays a strong role in my everyday looks. I definitely attribute my minimalist approach to her - though I do add my own flair of edge. She’s also been the most encouraging to me to do what makes me happy. And that is what I currently do with my little foot in fashion with Honey & Silk.
3) What advice would you give someone trying to get into fashion blogging?
Don’t hesitate and start! Do it! What stops people the most in my experience is that this market seems oversaturated with hundreds of millions of blogs, but if you have a voice and you stay true to it and dedicate your pursuit in blogging, there will be readers, there will be fans, and there will be a spot for you in the fashion blog world. There’s always room for a fresh perspective.
4) How do you describe your style and aesthetic? Items you try to incorporate into your daily outfit…
My style is feminine, fun, and edgy, with a minimalist approach. Like I said, because of my mom’s influence, I choose looks and clothes that are more classic or timeless but at the same time, I want to have a little fun so I pick things in bright colors or neat prints. I’ll definitely say that I’m always wearing a stand-out color or print in my daily look and minimal jewelry. I love the arm party and all but I just can’t pull that off!

5) What is the other half of your double life? Beside blogging?

I’m almost full-time blogging as I recently quit my day job in Real Estate, but I’m also working on another venture in fashion, so stay tuned!

GirlAvantGarde

Courtney is currently a law student living in NYC. Her blog GirlAvantGarde includes fashion advice, recipes and day to day inspirations. Check out our Q&A with Courtney!
1. When did you start blogging?
I’m a new girl to the blogging world. Although I’ve thought about blogging for a while, I started a little over a month ago and I’m excited and humbled by how fast my blog has grown in such a short period of time. I started taking photos this year in law school as a sort of stress reliever. I enjoy taking photos of the little things that make me happy everyday, whether its the first spring flower blooming in a park or a pretty new nail polish color I’m trying out. Blogging is my creative outlet and a wonderful place to look back on my photos.
2. What has been the strongest influence in your life (thus far)?
My biggest influences in life include my family and my boyfriend. My parents have instilled me with the confidence that allows me to be unafraid to try new things, and I know that my boyfriend and younger brothers will always be my biggest supporters. My biggest fashion influences, though, include Coco Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, and Brigitte Bardot.
3. What advice would you give someone trying to get into fashion blogging?
I’d say to just go for it. I was initially hesitant, but I’ve found the blogging community to be so warm and supportive. Take a lot of color, quality photos and pick a simple template for your blog. Most importantly, make sure that your personality shines through in your fashion and your stories; that’s what makes your blog unique and interesting.
4. How do you describe your style and aesthetic? Items you try to incorporate into your daily outfit…
I’m drawn to feminine silhouettes, lace, and tiny sparkly details. I wear heels or wedges almost everyday. While everything about my style screams girly, I also love classic pieces like big gorgeous stud earrings and simple black or nude pumps.
5. What is the other half of your double life? Besides blogging?
I’m currently a law student in New York. Although I’m constantly moving at 100 mph, and sometimes a little overwhelmed, both law school and fashion blogging allow me to channel my creativity in different ways and I feel so lucky to have these opportunities. I know it’s a bit of a juggling act, but it works for me!

The Only Fashion Princess

Rachella is a 19 year old fashion blogger. She is currently studying business and economics. Although she is still a teenager, her style evolution has become a young sophisticated lady. Check out her Q&A and her blog!
1) When did you start blogging? What prompted you to start?
I started in July, 2010. I read an article about fashion blogs in a magazine, and after visiting the ones that were mentioned in that article, I wanted to have one myself too. I was looking for a way to express my love for fashion for a while then, and I thought this would be the perfect solution. However, I never thought it would become such a great passion. I’m totally addicted to blogging and I love everything about it!
2) What has been the strongest influence in your life (thus far)?
That’s definitely my mum. She taught me to follow your dreams, do what you want, and respect the small things in life. She taught me to be yourself and I guess that’s one of the things that my readers like about my blog. I dress like I want, and I hope other people like that, even though I wouldn’t change if they did’t because I want to be myself. :)
3) What advice would you give someone trying to get into fashion blogging?
Something related to the previous answer: Be yourself! If you’re yourself and you’re having fun with blogging, everything will work out well.
4) How do you describe your style and aesthetic?
Items you try to incorporate into your daily outfit… I guess my style is sophisticated, feminine, and versatile. But please form your own opinion about it! :) Items I try to incorporate into my daily outfit depend on my mood. Some days I love a wonderful pair of sky-high heels, a pencil skirt and a classy top; other days I adore flat shoes, a simple tee and a leather jacket.
5) What is the other half of your double life? Beside blogging?
I’m a Business and Economics student.

La Mode by GV Miao

Gwen Vikkey Miao (Vicki Victoire) is a Chinese blogger born in Denver, Colorado. Vicki is proud of her Chinese heritage and can be seen through her blog La Mode by GV Miao and outfits. Vicki has lived all over the world and her multicultural background has influenced her style. Check out our Q&A with Vicki :)
1) How long have you been blogging for? What made you start?
Two years. I first set up my blog and facebook fan page in January or February of 2010. I guess it was my enthusiasm for fashion and faith. I used to be a fashion marketer and visual merchandiser for a few brands such as Ralph Lauren and TSE New York. I had a feeling that bloggers from all over the world were doing more or less the same thing.
Being conscious of my Chinese heritage, I tend to make my blog unique and genuine by specializing myself in oriental-inspired fashion with eastern motifs cross-fertilizing western styles which brings an exotic feel to it. You may find my blog exceptionally different from American or European bloggers’ in terms of style, themes and choice of topics.
2) How would you describe your aesthetic?
As my blog suggests, I admire oriental glam, Victorian elegance and vintage style. My aesthetic principle is that one must fully understand him/herself, avoid follow trends blindly, and be able to express his/her personality through clothes. God creates each of us special and unique. Not only top models deserve to be beautiful and fashionable. Everybody does as long as you have passion for life.
3) Your perfect outfit consists of?
Either a one-piece dress or jumpsuit with a perfect silhouette and exquisite hand-craftsmanship such as Shiatzy Chen’s beads work and embroidery and a pair of patent leather pumps. My perfect outfit should be made up of a variety of fabric combinations. I love the idea of mixing fabrics and textures such as chiffon with silk satin, lace with velvet.
4) A classic trend you try to incorporate into your style
Traditional Chinese dress qi-pao, I’ve got a knit top with qi-pao inspired high collar and sleeves by Vivienne Tam. It would be perfect to accessorize the look with Shiatzy Chen jade necklaces, which entirely exudes oriental glamor.
5) One thing on your bucket list you have to do…
Be a successful fashion blogger and share my love and support among the talented Chinese/Asian designers and bring them to the world’s attention; celebrate traditional Chinese culture through fashion, and launch my designer brand with the help of my mom who has been a seamstress all her life (Ooops, sorry I mentioned 3 things).

Fated to be Hated

Bebe Zeva from Las Vegas is known for her colourful pieces and combinations. One of the things I admire the most is she is also not afraid to accessorize. It’s hard to believe that this young fashionista is only 19 years old. We are excited to see where she goes from this point on. Check out her blog here!
1) How long have you been blogging for? What made you start?
I started blogging in October 2010 because I wasn’t doing enough to channel my creativity. I wanted to challenge myself by looking at a style with a new perspective. Seeing fashion as an art form gave me an incredible new appreciation of the industry. And now that I’ve developed standards for my style, I’m always aiming to out-do myself.
2) How would you describe your aesthetic?
Unpredictable! I couldn’t dedicate my aesthetic to any one theme, that’s why I adopt a new persona every day. Sometimes I wear conservative prints like argyle and polka dots, and other days I’ll wear a cut up graphic t-shirt with 6-inch platform combat boots. The more unrecognizable I look from one day to the next, the better!
3) What does your perfect outfit consist of?
There’s a perfect outfit for every occasion. Since I’m in the Spring spirit, I’d say my ideal outfit consists of a pair of patchwork black jeans, platform ankle boots, a baggy black band tee, faux fur vest, red paisley bandana, and crazy jewelry. I’m talking 10 pounds of metal hanging from my neck, wrists, and fingers! Evidently, I’m ready to rock this season.
4) A favourite trend you try to incorporate into your style…
Flower crowns. Every Monday I go to the dollar store and buy bouquets of silk flowers to weave into a wreath of floral wire. Ideally I’d like a crown in every color! Hopefully by the time I complete my collection, the trend won’t be irredeemably passe. ;)
5) One thing on your bucket list you have to do:
Contrary to my clothing choices, I’m not a big risk taker. I’d probably choose something safe (but potentially dangerous to my health in the long-term) like eating 150 buffalo wings drenched in hot sauce while watching an entire season of Sex and the City. Actually, that sounds too good to reserve for a bucket list… I think I’ll work it into my agenda this weekend.
